Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome may be at an increased risk of developing Type II Diabetes and heart disease. It is important therefore that women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome should be discouraged from smoking and encouraged to exercise and lose weight.
Women with irregular periods due to PCOS may be at increased risk of Endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb lining). Hormonal treatment with cyclical progestogens or the contraceptive pill will avoid the excess risk of this cancer.
Summary
PCOS is a common condition the symptoms vary from women to women and the medical treatment will depend on what particular symptoms are troubling her. Exercise and weight loss may reverse many of the effects of this condition.
