What if all the investigations are normal?

In more than half the women who suffer from heavy bleeding, no cause is ever found. If this is the case you may wish to do nothing about your periods.  However, despite the normal investigations, if your periods are a problem that affects your life, there are a number of possible treatments available that may be able to help you.  These range from simple herbal remedies to hysterectomy. Over the next xx pages the commonly available treatments that are available are described.  The information should serve as a guide to help you when discussing your problem with your GP or gynaecologist; it is not intended to replace your consultation.

When a cause is found

If the cause of your heavy bleeding is discovered during these investigations, you will be offered the relevant medical treatment.  If you have a contraceptive coil (IUD) your doctor will probably recommend that it be removed, as it can cause heavy bleeding.  Pelvic inflammatory disease is treated with antibiotics and bed rest. Polyps can be removed at hysteroscopy, while cancer of the lining of the womb requires a hysterectomy and/or radio or chemotherapy.  If you have any of these diagnoses, you doctor will explain the diagnosis and best treatment in greater detail.
