Gynaecological Ultrasound Scans

Gynae problems? We can help with a gynaecological ultrasound

Our ultrasound centre at Harley Street performs gynaecological ultrasounds to diagnose any gynaecological symptoms that are causing you pain, discomfort, or concern. Ultrasound scans are taken of the female pelvis to look at the size and appearance of the ovaries and womb (uterus) to determine if there is any underlying pathology or abnormalities. It is used to investigate and diagnose a number of gynaecological ailments e.g:

  • Irregular bleeding.
  • Pelvic pain.
  • Infertility.
  • Recurrent miscarriage.
  • Abnormal findings (cysts, fibroids, or other growths) found during a physical exam.
  • Checking the position of an IUD contraceptive device.

Our scans are transvaginal, i.e. through the vagina. Transvaginal scans provide clearer images than traditional scanning allows. It is a quick and safe procedure providing instant and accurate results.

What problems might a gynaecological ultrasound reveal?

  • Polycystic ovaries (PCOS).
  • Cancers of the uterus, ovaries, and cervix.
  • Endometriosis or adenomyosis (benign conditions).
  • Growths around the uterus and ovaries (such as fibroids or cysts).

What does the scan involve?

You will be asked to lie on a table with your knees bent, and/or with your feet held in stirrups. Our experienced gynecologist will then pass a probe into the vagina. The probe sends sound waves to a computer creating an image of your pelvic organs. Our gynaecologist will then study these images for any anomalies.

How should I prepare for the ultrasound?

Transvaginal ultrasounds can be done with an empty or partially filled bladder. However, a full bladder is necessary on occasion, but your gynecologist will discuss this with you beforehand.

Does it hurt?

A gynaecological ultrasound is, as a rule, painless. You may feel slight discomfort when the end of the probe is initially inserted into the vagina.

What happens after the scan?

Your doctor will discuss your results with you as well as your next steps if treatment is required.
