What is a fertility check?

A fertility check is a focused set of investigations that assesses the main factors affecting a woman's chance of conceiving: ovarian reserve, ovulation, hormonal balance, and the anatomy of the uterus and ovaries. It is designed to answer the questions most women arrive with: is anything wrong, is time a factor, and what should we do next. You get data, not vague reassurance.

Ours is led by Dr Hikmat Naoum, Consultant Gynaecologist (MRCOG), at 117a Harley Street. The exact investigation set is confirmed at your appointment based on your history and clinical need, so you are not paying for a fixed panel of tests you may not need.

When should you book one?

NICE guidelines recommend investigation after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse without conception, or after 6 months if you are over 35. Earlier assessment is reasonable if you have a condition that could affect fertility:

Some women also book before actively trying, to understand ovarian reserve and plan on their own timeline. If you are at that earlier stage, our pre-pregnancy check may also be worth reading about.

What the fertility check covers

The £450 guide price covers the consultation, clinical planning, and standard investigations. The typical components are:

  • Fertility-focused history review. Menstrual cycle pattern, previous pregnancies, medical and surgical history, medications, and lifestyle factors, without the appointment feeling rushed.
  • Pelvic ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound where appropriate, assessing ovarian reserve (antral follicle count), uterine anatomy, and checking for fibroids, polyps, or ovarian cysts. This can usually be done on the same day as your consultation.
  • Hormone blood tests. Drawn at the clinic and added where clinically useful. See the individually priced tests below. Timing within your cycle matters for some markers; the clinic will advise when to attend.
  • Tubal assessment. If there is clinical suspicion of tubal disease, Dr Naoum will discuss options including HyCoSy (a contrast ultrasound of the fallopian tubes) or referral for laparoscopy. These are quoted before being arranged.
  • Results review. Findings are explained during your appointment, with a follow-up consultation (£200) to review blood results once they are back and agree next steps.

Fertility blood tests, priced individually

Blood tests are charged separately from the assessment so you only pay for what your clinical picture actually calls for. All draws take place at 117a Harley Street. Our full menu is on the women's health blood tests page.

How the pathway works

  • Step 1: Book online. Secure your appointment with a £100 online deposit; the balance is paid at the clinic. If you would rather talk it through first, book an initial consultation (£250) instead.
  • Step 2: Assessment visit. History, examination, and ultrasound where appropriate, often all in one visit. Blood tests are taken at the right point in your cycle, which may be the same day or a short return visit.
  • Step 3: Results and plan. Once results are back, Dr Naoum reviews the full picture with you: lifestyle and timing advice, medical treatment, surgical correction where indicated, or referral to a fertility specialist for assisted reproduction. Your investigation results transfer directly, so nothing is repeated unnecessarily.
